Background of the study

Safety, communication, and collaboration are critical components of project management in the oil and gas sector due to the high-risk nature of construction activities and the complex interdependencies among project stakeholders.

According to research by Love et al. (2016), safety remains a paramount concern in the oil and gas industry, with construction projects often involving hazardous environments and activities. Ensuring the safety of workers and compliance with safety regulations is essential to mitigate risks and prevent accidents or incidents that could jeopardize project success.

Effective communication is another crucial aspect highlighted in the literature. Research by Zhang et al. (2018) emphasizes the importance of clear and timely communication among project teams, contractors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to facilitate coordination, resolve conflicts, and prevent misunderstandings. In the context of oil and gas construction projects, where teams are often geographically dispersed and work in dynamic environments, communication breakdowns can lead to delays, cost overruns, and safety hazards.

Collaboration among stakeholders is also recognized as a key determinant of project success in the oil and gas sector. Studies by Arditi et al. (2015) and Yitmen et al. (2019) underscore the significance of collaboration in fostering trust, sharing resources, and aligning interests among project participants. By working collaboratively, stakeholders can leverage their collective expertise and resources to overcome challenges, optimize project outcomes, and enhance overall project performance.

Furthermore, the dynamic nature of the oil and gas industry, characterized by fluctuating market conditions, regulatory requirements, and technological advancements, underscores the need for adaptive and resilient project management practices. Research by Aziz et al. (2020) emphasizes the importance of flexibility, agility, and continuous learning in navigating the complexities of oil and gas construction projects and achieving sustainable project success.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Despite the implementation of various safety regulations and project management practices, construction projects in the oil and gas sector continue to face significant hurdles related to safety incidents, communication breakdowns, and inadequate collaboration among stakeholders. These challenges can lead to project delays, cost overruns, and compromised quality, ultimately impacting the overall success of construction projects.

Research by Love et al. (2016) highlights the persistent concerns regarding safety in the oil and gas industry, with construction projects being particularly vulnerable to accidents and incidents due to the hazardous nature of the work environment. Furthermore, Wang et al. (2017) emphasize the importance of effective communication in oil and gas construction projects, yet communication breakdowns remain a common issue that hampers project coordination and progress. Additionally, Shan et al. (2018) underscore the critical role of collaboration among stakeholders in project success, yet challenges such as conflicting interests and lack of trust often impede collaborative efforts within the industry.

Therefore, the overarching problem addressed by this research is to investigate how safety practices, communication strategies, and collaboration among stakeholders impact the success of construction projects in the oil and gas sector. By identifying the specific human factors contributing to project inefficiencies and failures, this study aims to provide insights and recommendations for mitigating these challenges and enhancing project performance within the industry.

1.3 Objective of the study

  1. To assess the impact of safety practices on the overall success of construction projects in the oil and gas sector.
  2. To analyze the role of communication strategies in enhancing project outcomes within the oil and gas construction industry.
  3. To investigate the significance of collaboration among stakeholders in improving project efficiency and effectiveness.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do safety practices influence project outcomes in the oil and gas construction industry?
  2. What communication strategies are commonly employed in oil and gas construction projects, and how do they impact project success?
  3. What is the relationship between collaboration among stakeholders and project efficiency in the oil and gas construction sector?

1.5 Research hypotheses

Null Hypothesis (H0): There is no significant relationship between Safety, Communication, and Collaboration and Success of Construction Projects in the Oil and Gas Sector.

Alternative Hypothesis (H1): There is a significant relationship between Safety, Communication, and Collaboration and Success of Construction Projects in the Oil and Gas Sector.

1.6 Significance of the study

This study is significant as it contributes to understanding the human factors that influence the success of construction projects in the oil and gas sector. By identifying key factors such as safety, communication, and collaboration, the research aims to provide insights that can inform project management practices, enhance industry standards, and ultimately improve project outcomes in terms of efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

1.7 Scope of the study

This study focuses to assess the impact of safety practices on the overall success of construction projects in the oil and gas sector, analyze the role of communication strategies in enhancing project outcomes within the oil and gas construction industry, and investigate the significance of collaboration among stakeholders in improving project efficiency and effectiveness. Hence construction workers in Pinnacle Oil & Gas Limited, Pan Ocean Oil Corporation Nigeria Limited, and Capital Oil and Gas Industries Ltd, Lagos State shall serve as enrolled participants for this study.

1.8 Limitation of the study

Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint are:

Time: The researcher encountered time constraint as the researcher had to carry out this research along side other academic activities such as attending lectures and other educational activities required of her.

Finance: The researcher incurred more financial expenses in carrying out this study such as typesetting, printing, sourcing for relevant materials, literature, or information and in the data collection process.

Availability of Materials: The researcher encountered challenges in sourcing for literature in this study. The scarcity of literature on the subject due to the nature of the discourse was a limitation to this study.

1.9 Definition of terms

Human factors: Refers to the psychological, social, and organizational factors that impact human performance and behavior in the workplace.

Construction projects: Refers to the planned endeavors involving the building, expansion, or maintenance of infrastructure within the oil and gas sector.

Oil and gas sector: Encompasses the industry involved in the exploration, extraction, refining, and distribution of petroleum and natural gas resources.

Safety: Refers to the implementation of measures to prevent accidents, injuries, and occupational hazards within the construction environment.
